EDW: Kind Hearts & Light Sabres
I think it was John Betjeman who once remarked that in the event of a nuclear war, he would choose to be in Peter Jones because he couldn’t imagine anything bad ever happening there. That’s how I feel about one of my favourite actor of all time, Alec Guinness, who exudes kindness and humanity and I simply couldn’t imagine any harm coming to one in his presence.I once had the pleasure of meeting the great Sir Alec, a year or so before his death in 2000, and I was awed despite the fact that before me stood an old man, a bit doddery and confused. I regret not telling him how wonderful I thought he was, although I tend to think that it is usually kinder to treat the truly famous as one would anyone else, rather than make a song and dance about their celebrity. So I answered his questions, helped him as best I could, and he went upon his way, unhugged, because that is what I wanted to do to him.
Sir Alec’s career spanned more than sixty years and he appeared in some remarkable films, including one of my all time favourites, Kind Hearts and Coronets, where he played eight members of the D’Ascoyne family, (including Lady Agatha over there in a rather fetching hat), in one of the wittiest and blackest comedies I’ve ever seen. The film was considered rather racy in it’s time, and not entirely appropriate, but for Joan Greenwood’s comely Sibella, Dennis Price’s unctuous murderer, Louis, and Sir Alec’s virtuoso turn, I’d venture to suggest it’s well worth one hundred and six minutes of anyone’s time.
Of course, apart from his great talent and versatility, the wonderful films he appeared in, and his innate goodness, Sir Alec dressed well. Indeed, when I met him, he was properly kitted out for the town, and too few gentlemen can claim as much these days. And so for that, as much as for the great affection I bear him, Sir Alec Guinness is this week’s nominee for Elegantly Dressed Wednesday.* Sorry about that last picture - more gratuitous nudity, I'm afraid.

"Help me, Obi-Wan Kenobi. You're my only hope."
What can I say, I was four at the time. I thought it was the best thing ever...
great post. i'm going to go add this movie to my netflix queue immediately :)
Thank you for the gratuitous pic. Is/was she famous too?
I saw that Kind Hearts film, it was brilliant! Hilarious! It should be remade for a modern audience but I can't think of anyone capable of playing his role. (Ok, so it shouldn't be remade 'cos it's a classic, blah, blah, blah, but I'd go see it!)
I agree with stresspanda, he was also the greatest of all Jedi Knights.
His role as Obi-wan is my favorite character in the entire series, as well as the best acting from any actor in those 6 movies.
I had never heard of "Kind Hearts and Coronets" but your tribute to Sir Alec compells me to see it. Especially since that noble man is so fetching dressed in drag!
These posts always get me in some way or another--they are not throw aways or easy posts by any stretch.
Thank you for the tribute to this warm, talented man.
And thanks, completely unrelatedly, for your good and thoughtful words about my latest insomniatic post. I'm doing better of late, but every time I have a class with him, he sets me off again.
That's a sexy broad.
I too never heard of Kind Hearts, but my interest is so piqued!
He was special and so darn lovable.
As a kid I adored him in The Horse's Mouth. Did I ever pick up a few expletives.

Ha ha - in my ignorance, I thought Peter Jones was some chum of Betjeman's. The unlikely image that conjured up will stay with me for some time.
Guinness was a genius. You've given me the urge to watch the Lavender Hill Mob for about the 20th time.

And a whole generation of men think the same!

Great! Let me know what you think of it - I'm curious to know if the humour translates.
Toby
Dunno - she looks a bit like Diana Rigg to me...
Nah, they couldn't remake it - look at what happened to The Lady Killers.
Rachel
Yes, there's something very appealing about AG - in or out of a dress.
Jocelyn
My pleasure - on all counts. Glad you're winning the war.
Matt
Yeah, she's fit.
Muse
It's a classic Brit Flick.

I just love his versatility as an actor. Incredible.

Goodness me! The Poet Laureate a homosexual? Whoever heard of such a thing...?
Good choice. But I also love The Man in the White Suit, and The Lady Killers.

To another I would have never come up with on my own. You certainly are observant!!
